Adenosine or minoxidil? A scientific comparison for hair loss

Short answer: In a 2013 study of 110 men with male pattern hair loss comparing 0.75% adenosine with 5% minoxidil, there was no statistically significant difference in clinical improvement between the groups; patient satisfaction was higher with adenosine. This does not prove adenosine is equivalent to minoxidil. In a 2025 meta-analysis, adenosine’s effects on hair density and thick hair rate did not reach statistical significance. Minoxidil has broader clinical evidence in androgenetic hair loss.

What is adenosine and how does it act on the hair follicle?

Minoxidil is a long-established hair loss treatment. Adenosine is being studied mainly for its effect on thickening thinned hairs.

Adenosine is a molecule found naturally in the body and involved in communication between cells. Lab research shows it can increase growth-related signals such as FGF-7 and VEGF in dermal papilla cells, the part of the follicle that regulates growth.

For this reason, topical adenosine products are studied to support hair growth and help thicken thinned hairs. Small clinical studies in women and men have reported an increase in the proportion of thick hairs.

How was the adenosine vs minoxidil study done?

One clinical study addressing this question directly was published in 2013 by Faghihi and colleagues, comparing 0.75% adenosine with 5% minoxidil in people with male pattern hair loss.

  • 110 men with varying degrees of male pattern hair loss were enrolled.
  • One group used 5% minoxidil and the other 0.75% adenosine solution.
  • 16 people were excluded because of allergic reactions or loss to follow-up.
  • Clinical improvement and patient satisfaction were compared at 3 and 6 months.
  • Satisfaction also took into account how early patients noticed less shedding and new hair.

Is adenosine as effective as minoxidil? The results

There was no statistically significant difference in clinical improvement between the adenosine and minoxidil groups. However, patient satisfaction was higher with adenosine, which the researchers linked to patients reporting earlier reduction in shedding and earlier new hair.

Perceived improvement and objectively measured hair density or shaft thickness are not the same assessment. Satisfaction matters, but on its own it is not evidence of a stronger regrowth effect.

Is adenosine equivalent to minoxidil?

Based on this study, it is not correct to say “adenosine is equivalent to minoxidil”. No significant difference between groups does not prove equivalence; that requires studies designed for it with enough participants.

What does the overall evidence show? The 2025 meta-analysis

Overall evidence for adenosine is still limited. A systematic review published in 2025 assessed seven clinical trials. In the analysis pooling three eligible trials, differences in hair density and thick hair rate did not reach statistical significance.

Current research suggests adenosine is worth considering, especially for thickening thinned hairs, but minoxidil has broader clinical evidence in androgenetic hair loss and a stronger place in treatment guidelines.

Who might adenosine suit?

Adenosine is one option that can be considered, with a doctor’s assessment, for people who cannot tolerate minoxidil. How much it adds on top of minoxidil, and how far gains last after stopping, are not yet clear.

What to check when choosing an adenosine product

Form matters. Most studies used leave-on scalp lotions containing 0.75% adenosine. Their results cannot be transferred directly to serums of different strength or to shampoos that are rinsed off quickly.

When judging a product, consider not only the ingredient name but also:

  • its concentration,
  • its carrier system,
  • how often it is used,
  • clinical data on that specific product.

Hair loss assessment in Türkiye and Istanbul

Our personal care products are available at drbalin.com.tr.

For patients in Ataşehir and Istanbul, the cause of hair loss is identified first; then, if needed, minoxidil, adenosine products or hair treatments such as hair PRP and hair mesotherapy are planned with a doctor’s assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Is adenosine as effective as minoxidil?

In the 2013 comparative study there was no significant difference in clinical improvement between 0.75% adenosine and 5% minoxidil. This does not prove equivalence; minoxidil has broader clinical evidence.

Does adenosine stop hair loss?

Adenosine is studied mainly for thickening thinned hairs. In the 2025 meta-analysis, differences in hair density and thick hair rate were not statistically significant.

How does adenosine act on the hair follicle?

Lab research shows it can increase growth-related signals such as FGF-7 and VEGF in dermal papilla cells.

Why were patients more satisfied with adenosine?

Patients in the adenosine group reported noticing less shedding and new hair earlier. Satisfaction is not the same as objectively measured hair density.

Can people who cannot tolerate minoxidil use adenosine?

Adenosine is one option that can be considered with a doctor’s assessment for people who cannot tolerate minoxidil.

Do adenosine shampoos work the same way?

Most studies used leave-on 0.75% adenosine lotions. Results cannot be transferred directly to rinse-off shampoos or serums of other strengths.

Can adenosine and minoxidil be used together?

How much adenosine adds to minoxidil is not yet clear; combining them should be decided with a doctor.
