What is biofeedback?
Biofeedback aims to help people recognise bodily responses and practise self-regulation. In weight management, it may be considered as support when addressing strong cravings for sweets, chocolate or pastries, stress-related eating and habitual snacking. Feedback from measurable signals such as heart rate or breathing is used to practise awareness and regulation of stress responses. Alongside eating-awareness work and individual nutrition planning, the aim is more conscious management of eating habits. Potential benefit depends on the method and the individual response.
Biofeedback in weight management: appetite and eating awareness
Weight management also considers when and why you eat. Stress, habitual snacking and emotional eating can complicate adherence. Biofeedback may be considered alongside awareness and stress-regulation work in selected people. A small heart-rate-variability biofeedback study reported preliminary findings on food cravings, rather than proof of sustained weight loss.

Addressing cravings for sweets and pastries
Assessment explores when cravings occur, meal patterns, hunger and emotional triggers. The aim is to understand individual eating patterns and develop a practical plan, rather than label every craving an addiction. Biofeedback, if considered, is an adjunct and cannot be assumed to automatically eliminate desire for a particular food.
Biofeedback support for quitting smoking
The hardest moments when quitting smoking are the strong urges driven by stress and habit. Biofeedback uses feedback from bodily signals such as heart rate and breathing to help people recognise these stress responses and regulate them with breathing and relaxation techniques. In this way it can be planned as a support for managing cravings in people who want to quit.
Biofeedback is not a stand-alone treatment that guarantees quitting; it is combined with the decision to quit, a medical consultation and, when needed, evidence-based methods such as nicotine replacement. Quitting also matters for infections such as HPV and warts: smokers have been shown to have a higher risk of acquiring genital HPV infection (see Tackling HPV in 5 steps).
Biofeedback and its distinction from bioresonance
Biofeedback uses measured physiological signals to support learning and self-regulation. Bioresonance is promoted through different electromagnetic-frequency claims and is not synonymous with biofeedback. Findings from one approach cannot be transferred to the other. Claims about erasing food frequencies, correcting hormones or resolving intolerances are not established biofeedback effects.
Individual assessment and session planning
Assessment covers weight history, health, medicines, eating patterns and expectations. The method, measured signal and progress measures are discussed beforehand. If suitable, follow-up is individualised. Suspected eating disorders or loss-of-control eating also warrant appropriate specialist assessment.

Nutrition, activity and follow-up belong together
Sustainable nutrition, suitable activity, sleep and stress management are considered together. Follow-up reviews eating triggers, snacking and adherence alongside weight. Biofeedback does not replace indicated medical treatment or an individual weight-management programme.
What should you expect after sessions?
The aim is improved awareness and use of practised skills in daily life. Progress is reviewed and responses differ. A fixed session count does not guarantee a specific weight loss, complete appetite suppression or improvement of unrelated health conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Does biofeedback cause weight loss?
It may support stress and eating-awareness work in selected people. It is not presented as a stand-alone weight-loss treatment.
Are biofeedback and bioresonance the same?
No. Biofeedback feeds back measurable bodily signals. The approaches have different proposed mechanisms and evidence and should not be used interchangeably.
Will cravings disappear completely?
The aim is to identify triggers and support eating-regulation skills; permanent elimination of cravings cannot be guaranteed.
How many sessions are needed?
This depends on the method, goals and progress. Session counts from another centre do not automatically apply to a different device or protocol.
Should I also change my eating pattern?
Sustainable eating and activity remain central to weight management. Planning reflects individual needs and medical conditions rather than unnecessary food exclusions.
Does biofeedback replace medicines or gastric balloons?
No. These methods have different purposes and evidence. Do not stop prescribed treatment yourself.
