Black seed oil for hair: does it help hair loss?

Short answer: Black seed oil (Nigella sativa) is a plant ingredient used in hair care. In a small pilot study of 20 women with telogen effluvium, a scalp lotion containing Nigella sativa improved hair density and thickness over three months. But this is a single small study, the lotion is not the same as pure oil, and no effect has been shown in genetic hair loss. Black seed oil is not a proven hair-loss treatment, and it can cause allergic reactions.

What is black seed oil, and what forms exist?

Black seed, Nigella sativa, is a plant whose seeds are traditionally used in food and personal care. Hair products may contain cold-pressed seed oil, plant extract or its volatile (essential) oil.

These are not the same: cold-pressed seed oil, essential oil and standardised extracts differ in concentration and composition, so results from one study formula cannot be applied to every black seed oil on the market.

Does black seed oil help hair loss? What does the research say?

Human data are limited. A small double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study published in 2013 included 20 women with telogen effluvium and compared a scalp lotion containing 0.5% Nigella sativa essential oil with placebo.

Telogen effluvium is a common type of shedding in which more hairs than usual enter the resting phase. The lotion was applied daily for three months, and researchers reported improved hair density and thickness in the treated group.

However:

  • the sample was very small (10 per group),
  • only one type of hair loss was studied,
  • the lotion is not the same as pure cold-pressed oil,
  • results do not mean everyone will respond.

The study suggests black seed is worth researching for hair health; it does not show a proven hair-loss treatment.

How might thymoquinone affect the scalp?

Thymoquinone is one of the main bioactive compounds studied in black seed, of interest for its antioxidant and possible anti-inflammatory effects.

The key question is whether these properties help the environment around the hair follicle. Activity in the lab does not prove that enough reaches the follicle from the scalp surface or that hair growth increases.

Does black seed oil help dandruff or scalp fungus?

Its antimicrobial properties are one reason for interest in scalp care. A laboratory study of different black seed oil compositions examined antibacterial and antifungal activity and suggested composition matters.

Suppressing microbes in the lab does not show that the scalp microbiome is balanced or dandruff treated, so black seed oil should not be described as “clearing fungus” or “curing dandruff”. Persistent dandruff, redness or itching should be assessed first.

Does it work for genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)?

There is no strong clinical evidence that black seed oil alone controls genetic hair loss. A small telogen effluvium study cannot be applied to it.

Claims such as “blocks DHT”, “wakes sleeping follicles” or “brings back lost hair” go beyond the evidence. For options with stronger evidence, see our hair treatments page.

How should black seed oil be used on hair?

There is no scientifically established dose or duration for hair loss, and the study lotion is not a recipe for home use of pure oil. If used for care:

  • choose products made for hair and scalp with clear ingredients,
  • follow the label for amount, contact time and rinsing,
  • do not confuse essential oil with seed oil, and never apply undiluted essential oil to the scalp,
  • do not apply to irritated or broken skin without medical advice,
  • stop if burning, itching, redness or swelling develops.

Can black seed oil cause allergy?

Natural does not mean allergy-free. Allergic contact dermatitis and, rarely, severe skin reactions have been reported, including systemic reactions after topical use. Previous uneventful use does not rule out a later reaction.

Patch-test a new product behind the ear; seek medical help promptly for widespread rash, facial swelling, fever or breathing difficulty.

What to look for when choosing black seed oil in Türkiye

In Türkiye black seed oil is sold as culinary cold-pressed oil, food-supplement capsules and cosmetic scalp products. Do not choose on “pure” or “cold-pressed” labels alone:

  • Ingredients: which oils, fragrances and other components are included?
  • Purpose: is it made for the scalp?
  • Manufacturer: are the manufacturer, the company responsible in Türkiye, batch number and instructions clear?
  • Storage: are packaging and storage advice given?
  • Claims: does it talk about care, or make unproven treatment promises?

A stated thymoquinone content helps identify a product, but a higher percentage does not by itself mean more hair growth or better tolerance.

Hair loss can be caused by anaemia, thyroid disease, hormonal disorders, stress or medicines. For patients in Ataşehir and Istanbul, the right approach is to find the cause first and then, if needed, plan hair PRP, hair mesotherapy or medication alongside plant-based care.

Frequently asked questions

Does black seed oil regrow hair?

There is not enough evidence to say it regrows hair. Positive results from a small pilot study need confirmation in larger, independent trials.

Does black seed oil help hair loss?

A small study of 20 women with telogen effluvium reported better hair density and thickness with a black seed lotion, but evidence is limited and does not apply to genetic hair loss.

Can I apply black seed oil to my hair every day?

There is no daily-use recommendation that suits everyone; frequency depends on the product, its label and your scalp’s tolerance.

Should black seed oil be left on overnight?

There is no good evidence that overnight use works better. Follow the product’s recommended contact time.

Does black seed oil help dandruff?

Antimicrobial effects have been studied in the lab, but this does not prove it treats dandruff. Persistent dandruff needs assessment.

Does drinking black seed oil stop hair loss?

Eating black seed as food and treating hair loss are different things; there is no proven oral dose for stopping hair loss.

How long does black seed oil take to work?

No set time can be given. That a study assessed three months does not mean every product works in three months.

Can black seed oil cause allergy?

Yes. Allergic contact dermatitis and rare severe skin reactions have been reported. Patch-test first and stop if a reaction occurs.
