What are dissolving microneedles? How do they work in skin and hair applications?
Short answer: Dissolving microneedles are tiny needles, usually on a patch, made of biocompatible materials such as hyaluronic acid. They cross the outer skin barrier (stratum corneum) in a controlled way, dissolve in tissue fluid and release the active ingredients loaded into them in the targeted skin layer. They are promising for skin care and scalp use, but results are product- and formulation-specific, and not every product reaches the deep dermis or the hair root.

Why does the skin barrier limit topical products?
The effect of a product applied to the skin depends not only on its ingredients but on whether they reach the target area. The outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is a strong protective barrier that also limits penetration of some care and treatment ingredients, especially large molecules and some water-soluble substances. Dissolving microneedles aim to cross this barrier in a controlled way to help deliver actives to the targeted layers.
What are dissolving microneedles?
They are very small, dissolvable needles, usually on a patch, made from hyaluronic acid or other suitable biocompatible polymers. The actives to be delivered are loaded into the structure during manufacturing.
How do dissolving microneedles work in the skin?
Once applied, the microneedles cross the outer barrier depending on their design, dissolve in skin moisture and tissue fluid, and release their ingredients – creating another delivery route for substances that penetrate poorly from the surface.
The real goal is delivering the right ingredient, in the right amount, to the right layer. Depth depends on needle length, shape, material and application conditions; not every microneedle product reaches the deep dermis or the hair root.

Active ingredient and carrier are designed together
The active must stay effective during manufacturing, the needle must be strong enough to cross the barrier and dissolve properly afterwards, and dose and release profile are part of the design. So not every serum suitable for the skin surface is suitable for delivery into the skin; the formulation must be developed and assessed for that purpose.
Where are dissolving microneedles used?
Skin care and cosmetics: patches carrying hyaluronic acid and other actives are studied for fine lines, hydration and elasticity; some small human studies report positive results, but results are formulation-specific.
Scalp: researched to improve delivery to the scalp and target the hair-follicle environment; experimental results are promising but stronger human studies are needed.
Drug and vaccine delivery: also researched for some drugs, proteins and vaccine components; these are developed for specific purposes, and a cosmetic patch cannot be used the same way.
Does more penetration mean better results?
No. Success depends on the substance, its dose, the layer it reaches and the product's clinical data. The value of the technology lies in controlled, safety-assessed, fit-for-purpose delivery. Dissolving microneedles are a promising technology for skin and hair, and growing product-specific data should clarify where they help most.

Frequently asked questions
What are dissolving microneedles?
Tiny needles, usually on a patch, made of biocompatible materials such as hyaluronic acid, which dissolve in tissue fluid after entering the skin and release the actives they carry.
How does a microneedle patch work?
The needles cross the stratum corneum, dissolve in skin moisture and tissue fluid, and release their ingredients in the targeted layer.
Do dissolving microneedles reach the hair root?
Not all do; depth depends on needle length, shape, material and application conditions.
Do microneedle patches help wrinkles?
Some small human studies of hyaluronic acid and active-loaded patches report improvements in fine lines, hydration and elasticity, but results are formulation-specific.
Can any serum be used with microneedles?
No. A formulation must be developed and safety-assessed for delivery into the skin.
Are microneedle hair products effective?
Experimental results are promising, but stronger human studies are needed.
Does more penetration mean better results?
No. Success depends on the substance, dose, target layer and clinical data.
