Laser therapy in Hashimoto's: personalised nutrition and micronutrient support

Short answer: Laser therapy for Hashimoto's (photobiomodulation) applies specific wavelengths of light to the thyroid area of the neck. Some studies report lower antibodies, reduced hormone needs and better fatigue and sleep, but it does not replace standard treatment. Key parts of care after laser are personalised nutrition, micronutrient support for proven deficiencies and regular medical follow-up; never reduce thyroid medication on your own.

What is Hashimoto's disease?

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system targets the thyroid, gradually reducing hormone production. Fatigue, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, weight gain and menstrual changes may occur. Diagnosis uses examination, thyroid function tests, antibodies and ultrasound; hypothyroidism is treated with thyroid hormone tailored to the patient.

What is laser therapy in Hashimoto's?

Photobiomodulation (low-level laser therapy) applies specific wavelengths of light to tissue; its effects on cellular function, inflammation and thyroid function are being studied. Some studies report lower antibodies, lower hormone needs and symptom improvement, and a 2026 controlled study of 60 patients reported better fatigue, sleep and some psychological symptoms. Evidence is limited and protocols vary, so it should not be seen as a cure or a replacement for standard treatment. No serious side effects have been reported in published studies.

Why does nutrition matter after laser?

Needs differ: iron or B12 deficiency, low protein intake or digestive complaints may dominate. The aim is adequate, balanced nutrition, checking intolerances and correcting deficiencies; no specific diet has been shown to boost the laser effect. Autoimmune protocol (AIP) diets improved symptoms and quality of life in a small study but did not change thyroid hormones or antibodies. Gluten-free eating is needed with coeliac disease but has not been shown to change Hashimoto's course otherwise.

Why should micronutrient support be personalised?

The goal is to correct proven deficiencies (e.g. iron, B12, vitamin D) at the right dose and duration, not one package for all. Selenium lowered anti-TPO in some studies, but whether it slows progression is uncertain. Excess iodine – seaweed products, "thyroid support" supplements – can harm thyroid function in Hashimoto's.

Can thyroid medication be reduced or stopped?

Laser, diet or supplements are not reasons to reduce thyroid medication on your own; only your doctor should change the dose based on symptoms and blood tests (TSH, free T4). Too much hormone can cause rhythm problems and bone loss. At our clinic in Ataşehir, Istanbul, laser, nutrition and micronutrient plans are made after personal assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What is laser therapy for Hashimoto's?

Photobiomodulation – low-level light applied to the thyroid area; a researched supportive method, not a replacement for standard treatment.

Should people with Hashimoto's avoid gluten and dairy?

We usually decide based on physical examination, test results, allergies and food intolerances. Packaged, processed, ultra-processed and ready-made foods, as well as foods the person does not tolerate, are removed completely. We start with an elimination diet, then rebuild the diet according to the person's tolerance. Gluten-free eating is required with coeliac disease.

Should I take selenium?

It lowered anti-TPO in some studies but its effect on progression is uncertain; decide with your doctor.

Can I reduce my thyroid medication after laser?

No – only your doctor should change the dose, based on blood tests.

Does laser therapy for Hashimoto’s have side effects?

No serious side effects have been reported in published studies or in our practice. Treatment should be given after medical assessment, with a suitable device and precautions such as eye protection.
