Choosing laser, phenol or surgery for pilonidal disease

Start with disease extent

Openings, tracts, discharge, prior surgery and active abscess are assessed. A small skin opening does not always mean limited disease.

Each approach has suitable candidates

Tract-focused laser and phenol may be considered in selected cases. Extensive or complex disease can require other operations. An acute abscess may first need drainage.

Aftercare is part of treatment

Persistent discharge, new swelling or increasing pain require reassessment. Understanding care and review is as important as choosing the procedure name.
