• placement in a hospital setting with X-ray control,

An endoscopic balloon is placed under sedation and stays 6 or 12 months depending on the model, then is removed endoscopically; some models can be adjusted during treatment. The price therefore reflects:

• balloon model and duration (6 or 12 months),
• two endoscopies with sedation for placement and removal,
• hospital and procedure room costs,
• dietitian and doctor follow-up throughout.

What to ask when comparing quotes

Make sure you are comparing the same services. Ask whether the quote includes, in writing:

• the first consultation and blood tests,
• the balloon brand and model, its ÜTS (Product Tracking System) registration and original packaging,
• medicines for the first days,
• how many dietitian and doctor visits, and how many months of follow-up,
• removal for an endoscopic balloon,
• what happens, and at what cost, if early removal is needed,
• a balloon card after the procedure.

Does SGK or private insurance cover a gastric balloon?

Gastric balloons are not covered by SGK; the patient pays. Private insurance depends on the policy, and obesity treatments are excluded from many policies. Ask your insurer in writing before treatment.

Why be careful with cheap offers?
