Glutathione IV drip: what to know about the body's main antioxidant
Short answer: Glutathione is the key antioxidant that cells produce themselves. Intravenous (IV) glutathione may be considered as a supportive option for some complaints; however, the evidence for its effectiveness is limited. Its use for skin whitening has not been proven.
Glutathione is an antioxidant produced by the cells of our body that plays a central role in defence against oxidative stress. It is found in particularly high concentrations in the liver and is involved in neutralising certain harmful substances. Glutathione levels in the body are known to fall with ageing, intense stress, smoking, alcohol and some chronic diseases.
What is a glutathione IV drip?
A glutathione drip is the administration of glutathione through a vein (IV). Because glutathione taken by mouth is thought to be largely broken down in the digestive system, with limited absorption into the blood, the intravenous route may be preferred. Glutathione can be planned on its own or, where the doctor considers it appropriate, in separate sessions alongside other drips such as vitamin C.

What is it considered for?
A glutathione drip may be considered for complaints of tiredness and fatigue, conditions associated with increased oxidative stress, and general support. An important note: scientific evidence for the effectiveness of IV glutathione in these areas is still limited and research is ongoing. For this reason, it is planned as a supportive option only after the person's health has been assessed.
Should it be used for skin whitening?
Glutathione is often promoted on social media for lightening skin colour. However, the effectiveness and safety of IV glutathione for this purpose have not been proven, and health authorities in some countries have issued warnings about it. At our practice, glutathione is not given for skin whitening.
Who should not have it, or needs extra caution?
- People allergic to glutathione or to any ingredient in the drip
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women (as there are not enough safety data)
- People with asthma (inhaled glutathione has been reported to cause bronchospasm in some people; caution is also taken with IV use)
- People with serious kidney or liver disease
- People receiving cancer treatment (it is not given without consulting their oncologist)
How is it given?
After an examination and a review of your medical history, an IV line is placed and the drip is given slowly. It usually takes 15–30 minutes. You are monitored under a doctor's supervision during the session and can return to daily life afterwards. There may be mild tenderness or bruising at the injection site; allergic reactions are rare.
Supporting glutathione naturally
To support the body's own glutathione production, it is recommended to eat enough protein, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage, garlic, onions and foods rich in vitamin C, to sleep regularly, and to avoid smoking and alcohol. Drips do not replace these basic habits.
For which foods support glutathione and when IV use may be considered, see our article how to support glutathione.
