Ozone therapy in Ataşehir: what it is, how it is given and who it is not suitable for
Short answer: Ozone therapy is a GETAT treatment in which a medical ozone–oxygen mixture is given in controlled doses. In Turkey, only doctors holding a Ministry of Health-approved ozone certificate may perform it. It does not replace standard treatment; in suitable patients it is planned as a supportive option.
Ozone therapy is a traditional and complementary medicine (GETAT) treatment in which a mixture of medical ozone and oxygen is given to the body in controlled doses. In Turkey it may only be performed by doctors holding a Ministry of Health-approved ozone certificate, in licensed centres. At our practice at Metropol İstanbul in Ataşehir, ozone treatments are performed personally by Op. Dr. Salim Balin.
What is ozone therapy?
Medical ozone is a gas produced from pure oxygen with special generators and used at specific concentrations. When given in low, controlled doses, the aim is to prompt the body to activate its own defences against oxidative stress. How it works and in which conditions it is beneficial are still being researched; ozone should therefore be considered as a supportive option in suitable patients, not as a replacement for standard treatment.

Which methods are used?
- Major autohaemotherapy: a set amount of blood is taken from your arm, mixed with medical ozone in a sterile, closed system and returned into the vein. A session takes about 20–30 minutes.
- Minor autohaemotherapy: a small amount of blood is mixed with ozone and injected into a muscle.
- Local and intra-articular injections: small amounts of the ozone–oxygen mixture are injected into specific areas with a fine needle.
- Rectal and topical applications: may be chosen in situations the doctor considers appropriate.
Which method is used, how many sessions and at what intervals are planned individually after an examination and any necessary tests.
When is it considered?
Ozone treatments may be considered as a supportive option in situations such as chronic tiredness and fatigue, some joint and muscle pain, slow-healing wounds and circulation problems. It is not suitable for every complaint, and diagnosing and treating the underlying condition always comes first.
Who should not have it?
- People with G6PD enzyme deficiency (favism)
- Pregnant women
- People with uncontrolled hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland)
- People with a bleeding disorder or taking certain blood-thinning medicines
- People with a known hypersensitivity to ozone
For this reason, before the first session a detailed medical history is taken, you are asked about the medicines you take and, if needed, blood tests such as G6PD are requested.
What happens during and after treatment?
Apart from a slight needle prick when the cannula is inserted, the procedure is usually comfortable. You can return to your daily routine after the session. Rarely, temporary dizziness, tenderness or bruising at the injection site may occur. Because inhaling ozone gas damages the lungs, treatment must only be given with closed, controlled systems.
Why does a certified doctor matter?
Choosing the correct ozone dose, route of administration and materials is decisive for safety. Op. Dr. Salim Balin has held Ministry of Health-approved certificates in ozone therapy, mesotherapy and cupping since 2019.
