An immunity course before winter: what actually works?
Short answer: The foundations of immunity are the flu vaccine, regular sleep, a balanced diet, physical activity and not smoking. Deficiencies such as low vitamin D are identified with blood tests and corrected. Courses such as IV vitamins, glutathione and ozone can be added on top of this foundation as supportive measures in suitable people.
As the weather turns colder, flu, colds and other respiratory infections become more common. Many people think of IV drips when they hear “immunity course”, but the foundations of immunity are daily habits and preventive measures. Treatments such as IV drips and ozone can be added on top of this foundation as supportive measures in suitable people.
1. The foundation: preventive measures
- Flu vaccine: recommended every year for risk groups such as people over 65, those with chronic conditions (diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease), pregnant women and healthcare workers. Vaccination is recommended in autumn, ideally by the end of October; a vaccine given later can still provide protection.
- Hand hygiene: washing hands often with soap and water reduces the spread of infection.
- Crowded and indoor spaces: avoiding close contact with people who are ill and ventilating rooms are important.

2. Daily habits
- Sleep: 7–9 hours of regular sleep a night is needed for the immune system to work well in adults.
- Nutrition: a balanced diet with vegetables, fruit, pulses, whole grains and enough protein is the natural source of vitamin C, zinc and other micronutrients.
- Activity: at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a week is recommended.
- Smoking and alcohol: smoking weakens the defences of the airways; stopping is one of the most effective steps you can take for your immunity.
- Managing stress: prolonged, intense stress can have a negative effect on immunity.
3. Correcting deficiencies: vitamin D and others
Vitamin D levels can fall in the winter months as sunlight decreases. Levels of vitamin D, B12, iron and zinc are measured with a blood test; if a deficiency is found, the doctor plans suitable supplementation. High-dose supplements are not recommended without a deficiency.
4. Supportive courses under medical supervision
Alongside the basic measures, the following treatments can be planned as supportive measures in people for whom they are considered suitable. The effects of these treatments are still being researched and vary from person to person:
| Treatment | How it is given | Checked beforehand | Detailed article |
|---|---|---|---|
| IV vitamin C | Intravenous drip | G6PD, kidney function, diabetes | IV vitamin C |
| Glutathione drip | Intravenous drip | Allergy, asthma, pregnancy | Glutathione drip |
| Ozone therapy | Major autohaemotherapy and other methods | G6PD, pregnancy, thyroid, bleeding disorders | Ozone therapy |
| Vitamin and mineral drips | Intravenous drip | Identified deficiencies and chronic conditions | Planned at consultation |
The content of the course and the number and spacing of sessions are decided individually, based on the examination, your medical history and test results. The same course is not given to everyone.
When should you see a doctor?
If you have a high fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, a fever lasting more than 3 days or a marked decline in your general condition, see a doctor without delay rather than having a course. Supportive courses are not a treatment for an active infection.
