Endolaser: the 12 most asked questions answered (sessions, permanence, pain, scars, cost)

Short answer: Endolaser is a minimally invasive procedure in which laser energy is delivered under the skin through a thin optical fibre under local anaesthesia. Most areas need a single session, which takes roughly 30–90 minutes depending on the area. Swelling and mild bruising are expected in the first days, and most people return to desk work within 1–3 days. Results develop gradually over months and are assessed at 3–6 months. Fat cells that are reduced do not come back, but ageing and weight changes continue to affect the result.

In this article we answer the 12 questions patients most often ask Google and AI assistants about endolaser, based on published research and our clinical experience in Ataşehir, Istanbul.

Understanding endolaser

What is endolaser, and is it the same as Endolift?

Endolaser is a procedure in which a thin optical fibre is passed under the skin through a millimetre-sized entry point and laser energy is delivered directly to fat and connective tissue. Its medical name is laser-assisted lipolysis (LAL); “Endolift”, “endolazer” and “needle laser” are commonly used for the same method.

The controlled heat aims at two things: reducing limited localised fat and stimulating collagen renewal to improve mild to moderate laxity. Unlike surface lasers, the energy is delivered from inside the skin. Endolaser is not a weight-loss method. For more detail see our endolaser guide and our article What is laser-assisted lipolysis (LAL)?

How many endolaser sessions are needed?

In most areas endolaser is planned as a single session. The need for another session is assessed at the 3–6 month check, once collagen remodelling has taken place.

One session may not be enough for large areas with thick fat, areas with marked laxity, after weight gain, or when skin quality is reduced with age. In these cases a second endolaser session, fat aspiration or surgical tightening may be discussed. Unlike injection-based fat reduction, endolaser is not planned as a “package” of sessions.

Results, permanence and comfort

Is endolaser permanent, and how long does it last?

Fat cells reduced by endolaser do not come back, so in that sense the result is permanent. However, because ageing continues and weight gain can enlarge the remaining fat cells, it is not accurate to say it stays the same for life.

Skin tightening depends on collagen renewal and gradually lessens with natural ageing. The main factors that help maintain the result are stable weight, not smoking, sun protection and skin quality. Giving a fixed duration that applies to everyone would not be scientifically accurate.

Does endolaser hurt, and how long does it take?

Because it is done under local anaesthesia, most people only notice the anaesthetic injection and a mild pressure or warmth. Depending on the area the procedure takes roughly 30–90 minutes, and you go home the same day.

Small areas such as the double chin or jawline take less time; larger areas such as the abdomen take longer. Tenderness and tightness may last a few days, and the pain relief your doctor recommends is usually enough. Tell the team immediately if you feel a burning sensation during the procedure.

When are endolaser results visible?

Part of the change seen in the first weeks is swelling. Contour and tightening develop gradually over months, and the final result is usually assessed at 3–6 months.

Days 1–3
Swelling, mild bruising, tenderness
Weeks 1–4
Swelling settles, compression is worn
Months 1–3
Contour and tightening become visible
Months 3–6
Final assessment

Safety and suitability

Does endolaser leave scars, and what are the side effects?

Endolaser uses only millimetre-sized entry points, which usually fade over time. The most common side effects are temporary swelling, bruising, numbness and firmness; burns, irregularities and nerve effects are rare.

A series of 1,000 consecutive laser-assisted liposuction procedures reported no major complications. Even so, careful patient selection, skin temperature monitoring and an experienced practitioner are the key factors in safety. Seek care without waiting for your follow-up if you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, discharge or blistering. After facial treatment, report any asymmetry of the smile straight away.

Which areas can be treated with endolaser?

It is most often used for the double chin, jawline and neck. The abdomen and waist, arms, inner thighs, above the knees, buttocks and male gynaecomastia can also be assessed.

Who should not have endolaser?

Endolaser is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active infection in the area, with uncontrolled diabetes or a bleeding disorder, or where there is significant excess skin.

If you take blood thinners, do not stop them on your own; this is planned together at your consultation. For general weight loss endolaser is not the right starting point; non-surgical obesity treatments are discussed first. Realistic expectations are also part of suitability.

Comparison with other methods

Endolaser or liposuction?

Endolaser is chosen for limited fat and mild to moderate laxity; liposuction for removing larger amounts of fat by suction. Endolaser is usually done under local anaesthesia and recovery is shorter.

FeatureEndolaserTraditional liposuction
AnaesthesiaUsually localUsually general or sedation
GoalLimited fat + skin tighteningRemoving more fat
Entry pointsMillimetre-sizedMore and larger
Return to daily lifeUsually 1–3 daysLonger

When needed, both can be combined in the same session; recovery is then longer. With advanced laxity the effect of laser methods may be limited and surgical tightening may be the better option.

Endolaser or liquid facelift?

Endolaser reduces fat under the skin and tightens tissue with heat; a liquid facelift supports volume and skin quality with products placed under the skin. Endolaser suits a double chin and excess fat; a liquid facelift suits thin skin that has lost volume.

In suitable patients both can be planned at different times. See Liquid facelift or endolaser? for a detailed comparison.

Practical information

When can I return to work and exercise?

For small areas most people return to desk work the same day or within 1–3 days. Strenuous exercise, sauna, hammam and strong sun are usually postponed for 1–2 weeks.

A compression strap or garment is worn for as long as your doctor advises; usually at night for the face and neck and longer for body areas. See Recovery after endolaser for day-by-day care.
